DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh Announces 2023 May Tour Lineup
Pittsburgh, April 28, 2023 - Now in its 8th season, DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh, a local non-profit, is proud to highlight its May tour offerings.
Scheduled for Saturday, May 6, 2023 is Into The Wood: Part Deux led by James Weddell, Robert Jucha, and Pat DiRenzo. An extension upon last year’s widely popular tour of Swissvale Avenue, this walking tour features an interactive observation about the architectural styles of more than half a dozen Edgewood neighborhood dwellings. Tickets are priced at $20. Beginning at 10:00am, this tour duration is 90 minutes, and begins/ends at 455 Maple Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15218.
Scheduled for Saturday, May 6, 2023, Chatham University: Highlights From History will be led by Archivist & Public Services Librarian, Molly Tighe. Participants will enjoy the springtime Chatham arboretum, learn about industrialists who supported the founding of the Pennsylvania Female College, and step inside the former home of A.W. Mellon. Tickets are priced at $25. Beginning at 10:00am, this tour duration is 90 minutes, and begins/ends at the Mellon Center Front Terrace, Chatham University, Woodland Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.
Scheduled for Sunday, May 7, 2023, professional counselor James Ellermeyer, MA, NCC, LPC, will lead A Mindful Walk Through Highland Park. Participants will explore the park and its history using an intrinsic cognitive approach from the entry gate, to the garden fountain, to the reservoir. Tickets are priced at $25. Beginning at 2:00pm, this tour duration is 90 minutes, and begins/ends at 1467 N Highland Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.
Scheduled for Saturday, May 13, 2023 is the Roots of Pittsburgh walking tour. Guests will explore our city up close and personal with tour guide, Alan Irvine, combing the streets of Downtown to discover some of the history, events, and people that shaped Pittsburgh. One of the most popular summer walking tours, it is offered once per month from now through October. Tickets are priced at $25. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 2 hours, and begins/ends at the Market Square Clock at 431 Market Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
Scheduled for Sunday, May 14, 2023 is Ways of Pittsburgh: The Paintings of Pittsburgh’s Skinny Streets. Art enthusiasts will enjoy a painting demonstration by Plein painter Ron Donoughe with an opportunity for guests to see his Ways of Pittsburgh project, plus 20 never-before-exhibited paintings from Fallingwater. Tickets are priced at $15 with five tour times to choose from at 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00pm, 1:00pm and 2:00pm. Tour duration is 40 minutes and begins/ends at 208 Main Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201.
On Saturday, May 20, 2023, local historian Alan Irvine will lead Walking Four Forts at the Point, an exciting tour focusing on the historic sites of Pittsburgh’s revolutionary history and re-creating the events and experiences of the French and Indian War on this crucial triangle of land. Tickets are priced at $25. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 45 minutes and begins/ends downtown at 301 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
On Saturday, May 20, 2023, guests can go beyond the typical sightseeing tour and uncover the mysteries of the Ohio River on DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh’s first of five boat tours offered this summer. Led by engineer and local bridge expert Todd Wilson and architectural historian Justin Greenawalt, Secrets of the Ohio River is an immersive look at a seldom seen stretch of the Ohio from the Point to the McKees Rocks Bridge. Ticket prices range from $15 - $40. Tour boarding begins at 10:30am and disembarks at 1:00pm from the Station Square docks at 350 West Station Square Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
Scheduled for Sunday, May 21, 2023 is Walking Historic Manchester: Where Preservation Began. Experience the history and culture of Manchester with tour host, Jay Steele, and gain some beautiful insight into this NorthSide community's roots as well as a mapping of its current revitalization. Tickets are priced at $20. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 90 minutes and begins/ends at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 957 West North Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15233.
Scheduled for Sunday, May 21, 2023, art enthusiasts will enjoy an insider studio tour with Ashley Cecil: Eco-Feminist Artist. Specializing in multimedia artworks of flora, fauna and feminine forms that illustrate connections between the natural world and its human inhabitants, the artist will personally share her inspiration and creative process with attendees. Tickets are priced at $15 with four tour times to choose from at 10:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm and 2:00pm. Tour duration is 45 minutes and begins/ends at 957 Wellesley Rd, Pittsburgh PA 15206.
On Saturday, May 27, 2023, popular storyteller and tour host Alan Irvine will lead the Uncovering The Cultural District downtown walking tour. Attendees will discover the galleries, theaters, and quirky art filling the blocks between Penn and Liberty, along with the decades-long strategy that transformed this district into the thriving arts hub we enjoy today. Tickets are priced at $25. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 90 minutes and begins/ends at the Heinz Hall Outdoor Garden Gate at the Corner of 6th and Liberty, 601 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
