DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh Insider Tour Focus: Synagogues Series
Pittsburgh, April 11, 2023 - Now in its 8th season, DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh, a local non-profit, is proud to showcase a dedicated 2023 series of 3 Insider Tours featuring local synagogues.
Scheduled for Sunday, April 23, 2023, Poale Zedeck Synagogue: So Much History in Such A Small Congregation, will be led by Abby Mendelsohn, PhD. Built a century ago, this fourth home to one of Pittsburgh's longest-lasting Orthodox Jewish congregations represents generations of Pittsburgh Jewry and many facets of regional history. Tickets are priced at $15 with four tour times to choose from: 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:00pm, and 2:00pm. This tour duration is 45 minutes, and begins/ends at 6318 Phillips Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15217.
Scheduled for Sunday, July 16, 2023, The Downtown Shul: A Hidden Gem, will be led by Richard Brean. The oldest Orthodox congregation in Pittsburgh, The Beth Hamedrash Hagadol will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2023, and Rich will explain its centrality to Jewish life in the Hill and the Americanization of its immigrant Jewish community since its founding in 1873. Tickets are priced at $15 with four tour times to choose from: 10:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, and 2:00pm. This tour duration is 45 minutes, and begins/ends at 810 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
Scheduled for Sunday, August 6, 2023, An Architectural Jewel Box: Rodef Shalom Congregation, will be led by archivist Martha Berg. Tour its majestic sanctuary, designed by Henry Hornbostel, get a good look at magnificent stained glass windows by the Willet Studio and Hermann Schladermundt, and visit the adjacent Biblical Botanical Garden. Tickets are priced at $25 with four tour times to choose from: 10:00am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, and 3:00pm. This tour duration is 45 minutes, and begins/ends at 4905 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
