YOUR EXPERIENCE

Visitors to Brew House Arts will meet local artist Carin Mincemoyer and hear about her artistic practice including the development of her on-site public artwork, Dandelions. Step inside the building to see how the previous Duquesne Brewery Brew House has been transformed into a live/work community that includes a gallery space among mixed income artist preference housing, plus a display case of brewery memorabilia in the building lobby, and gallery slideshow featuring community programs and association history.

ABOUT THE BUILDING AND FEATURED ARTIST

The Duquesne Brewing Company, built in 1899, was one of the top ten largest breweries in the US in the 1940s, and was a major brewery in Pittsburgh until it eventually closed 1972. After ownership of the building lapsed due to non-payment of taxes in 1993, The Brew House Association purchased the building, setting the stage for Brew House’s future as a hub for creativity led by the vision and grassroots efforts of local artists. On the celebration of its 30th anniversary in 2023, the Brew House Association is rebranding as Brew House Arts, reinforcing its commitment to offer programs and exhibitions that bring people together, support new perspectives, and show the power of what art can do.

Carin Mincemoyer's work ponders the ways in which humans try to embrace, struggle to control, yearn for, reject, and alter the natural environment. Encompassing sculpture, installation, public art, and design, her creative practice includes work in diverse materials including wood, metal, discarded packaging, and live plants. Her work has been recognized with grants and awards from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the International Sculpture Center and the PA Council on the Arts. She has been awarded public commissions in Pittsburgh, NYC, and Philadelphia, and her work has been exhibited at venues including the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, PA, Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NY, and SPACES in Cleveland, OH. She holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon and an MFA from the University at Buffalo.
