Highland Park is more than just a park; it is also a racially diverse, residential historic district in the East End of Pittsburgh. Join tour host, Jay Steele, as he highlights the history, architecture, and hidden gems that make up this unique and beautiful Pittsburgh neighborhood.
Of note, the tour commences at the gates of Highland Park– a recreational area officially designated by ordinance as a City Park within the Highland Park neighborhood. Take a journey through the residential historic district and learn about the history and architecture of the area, including a set of row houses originally built in 1889, a drugstore that has served the community since the mid-1850s, a stained glass maker, and a mansion once considered as a potential site for the Civic Arena!
TOUR HOST BIO:
Jay Steele is a retired adjunct professor of Health and Physical Education at CCAC. He is a Pittsburgh native, born and raised in the Observatory Hill section of the Northside. He currently lives in Ross Township with his wife, Carol.
Jay continues to teach historical walking courses/tours for CCAC and the Pitt and CMU Osher programs. In addition, he has been a tour guide for DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh History and Landmark Foundation.
Jay’s walking tours and classes have been developed throughout the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County and combine his love of exercise, Western Pennsylvania history, and architecture.
