Urging Pittsburghers to Embrace Their Nebbiness!
PITTSBURGH, September 9th - DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh presents the 5th annual event, Doors Open Pittsburgh 2020, on Saturday, October 3rd (10am – 4:00pm).
This event celebrates our city’s heritage, architecture, and communities by providing behind-the-scenes access, some unique access, or just the opportunity to explore a diverse collection of iconic buildings and newly designed spaces.
Pittsburgh is one of 20+ US cities and European countries that host this innovative event.
“Now more than ever, we wanted people to feel connected to our City and to each other. We have plenty of building owners that felt the same way, and volunteers, so we are thrilled to be able to present the annual event again this year,” says Founder and Executive Director, Bonnie Baxter.
Formatted as an open-house, guests are invited to visit as many buildings as they want and do so in any order that they want. As such, there is no chance of being forced into a large group of people; guests can easily participate in the event with their COVID-pods.
Reservations are not required to enter any participating building – simply show your event ticket for admittance -- and put on a mask this year.
“DOP 2020 is COVID-friendly because you can walk outside from one building to another, providing the opportunity to get some fresh air. Then once inside a building, we will only allow a certain number of guests in each building at a time to ensure the opportunity for social distancing. Most people spend typically 10-15 minutes inside a building, so mask-wearing should not be too cumbersome to enjoy this event,” says Baxter.
This year the event will again focus on iconic and newly designed spaces in Downtown and a few in the Northside, with at least 8 buildings that are new to the event this year – two of them on the Allegheny River.
During the event day, guided tours, led by local experts are also available. These are called Insider Tours: https://doorsopenpgh.org/insider-tours/ On-sale 9/14 – 10/2 (until 5pm).
This event is made possible by DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh (a 5013c non-profit organization) and the generous support of Dollar Bank, and other sponsors and foundations, as well as our ticketholders and donors.

ABOUT DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh:
DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh is a 501(3)(3) non-profit, best known for presenting the annual DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh event every October.
However, in 2020, DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh expanded to include monthly tours, called Specialty Tours, which are thematic and fully guided bus or walking tours. The purpose of these tours is to provide a thematic tour experience in various neighborhoods and buildings beyond the annual event. Most of these tours have been cancelled due to COVID-19; however, some tours will resume beginning October 17th: https://doorsopenpgh.org/specialty-tours-2020/
Due to COVID-19, DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh also began offering virtual tours, called DOP Stories: A Virtual Storytelling Experience. This virtual series re-launches November 2: https://doorsopenpgh.org/virtual-tours-2020/
DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh is the brainchild of Bonnie Baxter, who was inspired to create this event in her native Pittsburgh after attending the Open House Chicago event, while living in Chicago for a handful of years. You can see the complete story at https://doorsopenpgh.org/page/history-of-dop
