DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh Highlights September 2023 Tour Lineup

Pittsburgh, August 28, 2023 - Now in its 8th season, DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh, a localnon-profit, is proud to highlight its exciting September tour schedule.

Art enthusiasts will enjoy a rare evening walking tour celebrating Light-Based Public Art: Downtown led on Friday, September 8, 2023 by arts administrator and curator Rachel Klipa. Guests will experience six artworks including "The Puddler," a neon light piece from the 1930s; "Cell Phone Disco," an interactive work in Tito Way by the artist collective Informationlab; and "For Pittsburgh," an LED artwork on the roof of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center by artist Jenny Holzer. Tickets are priced at $25. Beginning at 7:30pm, the tour duration is 60-minutes and begins/ends at the Agnes R. Katz Plaza, 667 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

Saturday, September 16, 2023 marks the last chance to set sail with DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh on their final boat tour of the season, Bridges and Buildings: Architecture of the Three Rivers. Led by engineer and local bridge expert Todd Wilson and architect Paul Tellers, this entertaining and immersive tour showcases the city’s iconic skyscrapers and legendary bridges of the golden triangle. Great for families and groups, the tour duration is 2 hours from 1:00pm - 3:00pm with a 30-minute pre-boarding window at 12:30pm at the Gateway Clipper Fleet Docks, 350 West Station Square Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. The inaugural date for this tour sold out in record time, so guests are encouraged to get their tickets early, priced at $15-$40 with discounted rates for children and seniors.

Join popular local tour host Alan Irvine for an insightful look at our city’s great history with Roots Of Pittsburgh on Saturday, September 16, 2023. On this walking tour, guests will explore magnificent buildings, uncover quirky public art, discuss the best places to eat, and learn about Pittsburgh's intrigues like the Great Fire of 1845, Mr. Frick's Revenge, the Wall Street of Pittsburgh, and more. Tickets are priced at $25. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 2 hours and begins/ends at the Market Square Clock, 431 Market Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

Those thirsty for a mix of past, present and future can join Award-winning historian, USMC Veteran, and founder of the Greater Hazelwood Historical Society of Pittsburgh, JaQuay Edward Carter, for Historic Hazelwood: A Tour of Pittsburgh's "Melting Pot" on Sunday, September 17, 2023. Explore this rich neighborhood from the 18th century John Woods House built in 1792, to wealthy suburban estates from the Industrial Revolution and a futuristic robotics facility at Mill 19. Tickets are priced at $20. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 90 minutes and begins/ends at 4501 Lytle Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15207.

Also on Sunday, September 17th, 2023, professional counselor James Ellermeyer, MA, NCC, LPC, will lead A Mindful Walk Through Highland Park. Participants will explore the park and its history using an intrinsic cognitive approach from the entry gate, to the garden fountain, to the reservoir. Tickets are priced at $25. Beginning at 2:00pm, the tour duration is 90 minutes and begins/ends at 1467 North Highland Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.

Mark your calendar to explore one of Pittsburgh’s oldest neighborhoods on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh’s South Side Neighborhood Event. During this large-scale neighborhood showcase, participants will go behind the scenes, enjoy unique access, and savor the opportunity to explore this historically significant neighborhood. Highlights include nearly 20 stopping points and activities including historic churches, backstage theater spaces, beloved businesses and hotels, modern condominiums, brew houses, pottery studios, public art installations, meet-the-artist opportunities and much more. Self-guided and family friendly, the event hours are 10am - 4pm. General admission tickets are priced at $20 with discounts for kids and seniors. History, notoriety, and happenstance merge to form a quilt pattern as American as apple pie with DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh’s Sewickley Secrets walking tour. Join former librarian and amateur historian, Meghan Snatchko, as we unravel some secret history on a 1-mile loop of this quaint and picturesque town along the Ohio River. Tickets are priced at $20 with two tour dates to choose from on Sunday, September 24th or Saturday, October 21, 2023. Beginning at 2:00pm, the tour duration is 90 minutes and begins at 200 Broad Street, Sewickley, PA 15143.

You can’t go wrong on a walking tour with one of DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh’s most popular hosts, Jay Steele, and Walking Carnegie: The Town Named for Andrew is no exception. Join him on Saturday, September 30, 2023 for some exciting highlights of this great neighborhood including the Honus Wagner Museum, Indian Community Center, The Carnegie Library/Civil War Room, and much more! Tickets are priced at $20. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 90 minutes and begins at the Carnegie Library at 300 Beechwood Avenue, Carnegie, PA 15106.
