DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh Highlights June 2023 Tour Lineup

Pittsburgh, June 2, 2023 - Now in its 8th season, DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh, a local non-profit, is proud to highlight its June tour schedule. 

Offered on Saturday, June 3, 2023 is an insider tour of Johno’s ART Studio and Maria’s Ideas. The creative and colorful space is owned and operated by married couple and local artists Johno Prascek and Maria DeSimone Prascek, who will share the creative process of original enamel & sand paintings featuring the Pittsburgh Skyline, fine art reproductions, and unique, whimsical, mixed media creations made from repurposed materials. Tickets are priced at $15 with three tour times to choose from at 10:00am, 10:30am, and 11:00am. Tour duration is 30 minutes and begins/ends at 1705 Arlington Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15210.

One of the top international venues for jazz in the world (as professed by Downbeat Magazine) is right here in Pittsburgh and has scheduled an insider tour with DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh on Sunday, June 4, 2023 with Backing Jazz: Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild. Music enthusiasts will tour the newly renovated music hall, learn about concert and tech deck technology, watch what happens in a professional video studio and enjoy listening to past concerts from the MCG Jazz archives. Tickets are priced at $15 with three tour times to choose from at 10:00am, 11:30am, and 1:00pm. Tour duration is 90 minutes and begins/ends at 1815 Metropolitan Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15233.

Offered on both Sunday, June 4 (or) Sunday, June 11, 2023 is Oakland’s Walk of Fame led by Pitt alumna and outdoor tour enthusiast Sue Flaherty. This walking tour explores the Oakland neighborhood and walks in the footsteps of famous people with connections to Pittsburgh. Tickets are priced at $20. Beginning at 9:00am, this tour duration is 2 hours, and begins/ends at Phipps Conservatory, 1 Schenley Park, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. 

Guests can step through the gates of Choderwood: A Secret City Riverfront Oasis with DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh on Sunday, June 11, 2023. See residential nature at its finest on a guided tour of this private residence with the owners themselves including the lush gardens, koi ponds, greenhouse enclosed swimming pool and a meditation hut and more. Tickets are priced at $15 with four tour times to choose from at 11:00am, 12:00pm, 1:00pm and 2:00pm. The tour duration is 45 minutes, and begins/ends at 7665 Lock Way West, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.

Explore one of Pittsburgh’s most up-and-coming neighborhoods on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh’s Millvale Neighborhood Event, the first of two large-scale 2023 neighborhood showcases.  Participants will go behind the scenes, enjoy unique access, and savor the opportunity to explore this eclectic neighborhood. Highlights include nearly 20 stopping points and activities including theaters, breweries, government offices, artist spaces, and a Kids’ Photo Safari. Self-guided and family friendly, the event hours are 10am - 4pm with a free shuttle bus running on a continuous loop throughout the day. General admission tickets are priced at $20 with discounts for kids and seniors. Guests can access information and volunteer staff on event day in GAP Park at 518 Grant Avenue, Millvale, PA 15209. 

Scheduled for Saturday, June 24, 2023 is the Allegheny West: Millionaire Row walking tour. Guests will explore this beautiful neighborhood alongside tour guide Jay Steele, with a full list of highlights including more than two dozen houses and mansions along Ridge Avenue. Tickets are priced at $20. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 1 hour and 45 minutes, and begins at CCAC Jones Hall, 808 Ridge Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.

On Saturday, June 24, 2023, guests can go beyond the typical sightseeing tour and sail with DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh from Acrisure to Herr’s Island shore while hearing interesting local stories and enjoying quirky legends. The second of five boat tours offered this summer, Histories and Mysteries of the Allegheny River is led by architectural historian and preservationist Justin Greenawalt and award-winning transportation engineer Todd Wilson, MBA, PE. Ticket prices range from $15 - $40. Tour boarding begins at 12:30pm and disembarks at 3:00pm from the Station Square docks at 350 West Station Square Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. 

Join popular local tour host Jay Steele for an insightful look at the South Side Flats with Walking The South Side: The Ultimate Melting Pot on Saturday, June 24, 2023. Guests will explore the national historic Main Street of East Carson, including many ethnic churches, the famous Market House, the Former Duquesne Brewery, the Henry Oliver Bath House and more. Tickets are priced at $20. Beginning at 10:00am, the tour duration is 90 minutes and begins/ends at the South High Residences (former Old South High) located at 10th and East Carson Pittsburgh, PA 15203.
