ABOUT THIS BUILDING

Trinity Cathedral holds an important place in the history and founding of Pittsburgh. A land grant was given in October 1787 by the heirs of William Penn for a place of worship in Pittsburgh. The land was originally a burial ground used by Native Americans, the French at Fort Duquesne, and the British at Fort Pitt. The burying ground at Trinity Cathedral is the oldest, unreconstructed place in the City of Pittsburgh.

In 1805, a charter was given for Trinity Church, and the first church known as “The Round Church” was built. In 1825, a Gothic structure was built on the current site and consecrated the new Trinity Church.

In 1872, the present church was completed. The stone building with spire and clock was built in the English Gothic style and designed by architect Gordon W. Lloyd. The spire is 200 feet tall, and the original white mahogany pews are still in use today. In 1927, Trinity Church became Trinity Cathedral for the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

In 1967, a fire swept through the nave of the Cathedral, and following the fire the nave, chancel and altar were modernized. The altar was brought forward, making a free-standing altar. New windows replaced the ones destroyed by the fire, and a 14-foot suspended cross made of steel, glass and aluminum (in honor of Pittsburgh’s major industries) was installed above the altar.

Today, Trinity Cathedral still plays a vital role in the life of the City of Pittsburgh in a variety of ways: in the support of local arts, its commitment to the recovery community, and in being a place of worship and prayer.

A few features of note:

— In 1922, a hand carved marble pulpit by Bertram Grosvener Goodhue was installed. The carvings include the four Evangelists interspersed with the early rectors of Trinity Church. The pulpit is still in use today.

— In 1968, a series of stained glass windows were installed by Hunt Stained Glass Studios. Designed specifically for Trinity Cathedral, the windows depict Christ active in every aspect of life. The windows include welders, nurses and doctors, and the Pittsburgh City shield.

— The baptismal font is from the first Trinity Church (1825-1871) and is still in use today.
