ABOUT THIS BUILDING

The National Flag Foundation (NFF) is a national, non-profit, and non-political organization dedicated to honoring the American Flag as a potent symbol of the United States' ideals and history. Established over a half century ago, the NFF is recognized both nationally and locally as the primary authority on the American Flag. The foundation's mission is centered on education about the American Flag and honoring those who serve to protect it.

As the nation approaches the 250th anniversaries of the Army, Navy, Marines in 2025, and the United States in 2026, the NFF is preparing to enhance its visitor center to better celebrate these milestones. Recent successful initiatives like Project Purple Heart, which created a public online directory for all Purple Heart recipients, showcase the foundation's impact. In collaboration with the various other non-profit entities, the NFF plans to install new lighting and display cases in the Koppers Building to honor the military branches.

The foundation has a long-standing tradition of providing educational resources aimed at fostering a deeper understanding and respect for the Flag. Through materials for teachers, students, and citizens, the NFF enhances knowledge about the Flag's history, symbolism, and proper etiquette.

The NFF's goals are to:

  • Promote understanding and respect for the Flag and its ideals.

  • Enrich the nation’s knowledge of and respect for the Flag.

  • Incorporate inspiring Flag-related stories into cultural and media dialogues.

  • Encourage Americans to proudly display the Flag regularly.

The NFF aims to:

  • Increase the number of Americans who regularly fly the Flag.

  • Educate the public on proper Flag care and etiquette to enhance its role in the national identity.

  • Encourage Americans to proudly display the Flag on Flag Day pursuant to the US President’s annual Proclamation and also at other times during the year.

The National Flag Foundation continues to be a pivotal force in promoting patriotism and respect for the American Flag. Through its various initiatives and educational efforts, the foundation aspires to honor the Flag and it’s place in American society, and by doing so, strengthening our national spirit and unity.
