ABOUT THIS BUILDING

At its dedication 117 years ago, HUPC was the largest and wealthiest house of worship in the Steel Valley. The Homestead United Presbyterian Church building dedicated on June 19, 1904 is constructed of Brown Hummelstone Sandstone. It is the second structure on the site. The first was dedicated in 1874. The land for both was donated by Abdiel McClure for whom McClure Street is named. The church’s original prayer meetings and Sunday School were held in his carpenter shop. Of special interest are the beautiful stained glass windows which enclose the sanctuary. The memorial window on the east side of the church was placed there to the memory of Abdiel and Anne McClure while the one on the south side was donated by Dr. Matthew West (of West Street fame) as a memorial to Sarah R. West. The north side stained glass contains the seals of the Waldensian, the Huguenot, the Puritan, and the Scottish churches. The organ behind the pulpit was built by M.R. Moeller and is concealed by an elaborately carved grill. The Echo division is located behind a wall at the rear of the auditorium.
