ABOUT THIS BUILDING

Built in 1902 as the home for the Homestead Baking Company, the Bakery supplied 23 retail bakers in the Homestead and Pittsburgh area with everything they required including flour, cocoa nut, sugar, etc.—even horses! Horace W. Crider, the original bakery manager, was the first baker in the United States to follow the Fleischmann Co. innovation of “Atmospheric Conditions in Relation to Bread Making”. This was an innovative approach to commercial baking that guided bakers on how to adjust their baking process to compensate for humidity and air temperature, creating a consistent product no matter what atmospheric conditions were at the time of baking. The Homestead Baking Company was eventually acquired by the Braun Baking Company who continued baking operations in the building until 1940. In 1941, Half Bros. Inc, a Homestead-based retailer, purchased the two buildings for use as a warehouse for their expanding retail furniture, appliance, carpet, women’s apparel, and children’s toy business. World War II efforts brought about a new tenant: the Defense Plant Corporation, in 1942. The Homestead Bakery Lofts building sat vacant for nearly a decade before talks of redeveloping the property began in the mid 2010s. In 2016, ACTION-Housing, Inc. purchased the building to create a unique and historic mixed-use property.
