YOUR EXPERIENCE

Visitors start their exploration in the grand music hall, preserved in time from 120 years ago. Stand on the very stage Andrew Carnegie, Jeff Goldblum, Boz Scaggs and others entertained audiences from near and far. The hall will lead you to the library’s magnificent reading room, beautifully restored with a grand fireplace, antique seating to curl up and read a good book. Tour the children’s/teen space murals and the state-of-the-art STEM lab. In the lower level, see the oldest indoor swimming pool in Western Pennsylvania. Explore other amenities: indoor baseball training facility, indoor basketball court with running track, coffee shop, exercise spaces and weight rooms.

ABOUT THIS BUILDING

In 2014, CNN selected the Carnegie of Homestead as one of the 27 most beautiful libraries in the world to visit. Built in 1898 by Andrew Carnegie, the historic atmosphere is home to a public library, a 1,000-seat music hall, and a full-service athletic club. The French Renaissance design was the work of Pittsburgh architects Frank Alden and Alfred Harlow. The beautifully restored library has served families for over 120 years, including immigrants from the early 1900’s to present day families. The 1,000-seat grand music hall maintains much of its original charm, with a few modern upgrades. Both lobbies are lined with marble & the seats are original from the 1800’s. Years ago the Athletic Club served the steel-town residents as a training facility for gymnasts, wrestlers, swimmers, soccer and football. Swimmers from the 1932and 1936 Olympics trained in our historic indoor swimming pool.
