ABOUT THIS BUILDING

The Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) Conference Center opened in September 1988 and was named after George J. Magovern, MD, a highly innovative cardiothoracic surgeon at AGH who was instrumental in establishing not only the Hospital itself, but the City of Pittsburgh as a major center for medical treatment and research. Among the many milestones throughout his distinguished career at AGH, Dr. Magovern introduced to western PA the very first open-heart procedures using the heart-lung machine in 1957, developed a revolutionary sutureless prosthetic aortic valve, and performed the world’s second single lung transplant in 1963.

In 1985, his son, Dr. George Magovern, Jr., performed the first heart transplant at AGH in 1987. Dr. Magovern currently serves as the system-wide Department Chairman for Allegheny Health Network. He and his father are the only father-son cardiac surgeons to serve on the American Board of Thoracic Surgery since its inception in 1948.

The George J. Magovern Educational Conference Center today serves as an enduring testament to the spirit of innovation, academic excellence, and exceptional medical care that has defined the Magovern family legacy, Allegheny General Hospital and its thousands of dedicated caregivers, scientists, and educators for more than a century.

The recently renovated AHN Cancer Institute serves as a state-of-the-art facility offering the latest in imaging technology for improved diagnostics. It utilizes robot-assisted and minimally invasive surgical techniques. The center also features 49 chemotherapy and infusion bays.
