NRG Energy Center Pittsburgh

111 South Commons

Neighborhood: Northside

Saturday: 10a-1p

Categories: Lobby-Only Access

District Energy plant was built by Equitable Gas Company in 1965 to produce steam and chilled water for Allegheny Center development (currently Nova Place).

Through the years Allegheny General Hospital, Community College of Allegheny County and PNC Park have been added to the system.

The plant still features two steam driven chillers in addition to four electric chillers. We also have two generations of cooling towers operating on the property just west of the annex building.

YOUR EXPERIENCE: Visitors will be able to stand on the South Commons patio and look into an operating steam and chilled water district energy plant. Due to safety concerns with an operating plant, access inside the plant will not permitted. But NRG representatives will be onsite to detail the energy-making process at the plant.
